Free Lunch from European Universities - ZERO Tuition Fee

Just lately, many of my friends asked me about the process to apply the Master’s programme in Europe. They were surprised when I told them that I don’t have to pay tuition fee for the study. In other words, I only need to pay the subsistence fee. As you may know, the tuition fee is considered as fixed cost. It implies that you have to pay it even though you haven’t got enough money for “EATING”. This tuition fee is the major part of the expenses for oversea study. Since many people asked for more information about where can we all study without paying the expensive tuition fee. I decided to write some information down.

Where can I find free University Education - ZERO tuition fee?
In essence, only some countries in Europe provide this (zero tuition fee) benefit to student in Secondary School and University.

First, the Scandinavian Countries doesn’t require their citizen and foreign students to pay the tuition fee. The trade-off is that the citizens in the countries have to pay substantial Income Tax to support the every benefit provided by the government. This denotes that actually they pay for the benefit they got. There is no free lunch in the world. But as a guest, you may get Free Lunch sometimes. Some foreigners capitalize on this opportunity to enjoy the benefits. I am the one who seize this chance to study in Sweden. Of course, nothing is perfect. Most of Scandinavian Country does provide high quality of living environment, at the same time, everyone also need to pay higher subsistence fee such as food, accommodation, transport and so on ... ...  For instance, everyone need to pay the tax such as GST tax (Singapore) when buying anything.

Second, some countries in Europe provide reasonable cost effective education too. For example, you only need to pay 500 Euro per semester. There is only 2 semester per year. Total tuition fee is 1000 Euro or SGD 2000 per year. The other country which is more similar is that Italy, France and Belgium. For the Italy, most of the student can get tuition fee allowance. For some cases, you don’t need to pay the tuition and may have extra pocket money if you get better tuition allowance and scholarship. For France, the government subsidizes lots of money to Public Universities. Thus, all students pay little amount of tuition fee eg: 1000 Euro per year. However, this is not the case for private Universities in France.

The Free Lunch is going to disappear soon
Since last few years, there has been lots of debate on charging the tuition fee to foreign students in Europe. According to the news, there have been rapid increasingly number of students come to Europe after the Universities introduced the Bachelor/ Master's Programmes in English. It turns out that some countries started imposing the tuition fee to student outside the Europe. For example, Denmark decided to charge tuition fee to foreigner started from 2007, which previously there weren’t any tuition fee. Sweden also is considering charging the tuition fee start from 2011. Finland would like to do the same. Norway still hasn’t announced the plan yet. The convention is that Norway will follow the same policy soon.

What should I do if I am interested in Studying in Europe?
Ok. I recommend you to attend the Education Fair to understand more. However, the Education Fair – Study in Europe is often conducted in the application period (December). So, you might not have enough time to make the application since, for example, you hasn’t got the IELTS, TOFEL or GMAT result. Then, you will have to wait until next year because there is normally only one application period in a year (from December to March) for Autumn Intake.

If you wish to finish your college degree, consider enrolling online and try to look for an education loan so that you do not have to worry about where and how you will pay for the tuition fee.
